United States Cybersecurity Magazine: Patchwork State Privacy Legislation vs Federal Law: Small and Midsize Businesses Would Benefit from One Clear Path
Michelle A. Schaap was published in the United States Cybersecurity Magazine with an article advocating for the adoption of uniform Federal cybersecurity legislation for the benefit of small and medium-sized businesses currently faced with a regulatory environment driven by varying jurisdictional statutes and who are left to wrestle with the compliance risk inherent to such inconsistency.
In the article, she notes, "If there are clear, uniform standards, with consistent consumer rights, then businesses will be in a better position to protect and respect individuals’ rights and would appropriately be held accountable for failure to do so. Leaving small and midsize businesses to track 50 states’ individual privacy laws, however, is a recipe for failure."
