Michael Spinello focuses his practice on a wide range of environmental regulatory, litigation, insurance coverage and transactional matters.
Before joining CSG Law, Michael worked as an associate attorney at a prominent northern New Jersey law firm where he counseled clients in all aspects of environmental law including site remediation, environmental due diligence, environmental permitting, and regulatory compliance under state and federal law, including the New Jersey Industrial Site Recovery Act (ISRA), the Site Remediation Reform Act (SRRA) the Solid Waste Management Act (SWMA), the Resource Conservation Recovery Act (RCRA), and other federal and state environmental statutes.
Michael also prosecuted and defended cost recovery actions under the Spill Compensation and Control Act (Spill Act) and the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA), represented parties subject to enforcement actions by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and other environmental regulators and filed complaints to obtain site access. He is proficient in all phases of litigation, including drafting pleadings, drafting discovery requests and responses, managing large scale document reviews and productions, motion practice, and trial preparation.
Earlier in his career, Michael served as a Deputy Attorney General at the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General for the Environmental Enforcement and Environmental Justice Section. In that capacity, he assisted the Department of Environmental Protection in recovering unpaid costs for the remediation of contaminated sites and was involved in enforcing the Spill Act, Water Pollution Control Act, ISRA, Brownfield and Contaminated Site Remediation Act, and SRRA. He also executed enforcement actions in municipal court and the Office of Administrative Law.
Michael clerked for the Hon. Jodi Lee Alper, P.J.Ch. with the Essex Vicinage – Chancery Division, General Equity Part. He was also a Henry J. Raimondo Legislative Fellow for the Eagleton Institute of Politics’ Graduate Program in Politics and Government. As part of his fellowship, Michael worked in the New Jersey Legislature for Office of Legislative Services- Environment, Agriculture Energy & Natural Resources Section.
Michael earned his J.D. from Rutgers Law School, and his B.A. from West Virginia University.
